The interior design industry has seen significant expansion in recent years. With designers entering the realm of international celebrity, demand to enter this market has grown increasingly competitive. For most careers, an education via either an Ivy League University (US) or Russell Group University (UK) provides the necessary platform for success. However, with design becoming more specialist, the process of identifying the best institution for your chosen craft is infinitely more challenging.

With more universities beginning to include interior focussed degrees as an option, today’s students are overwhelmed with choice. We have collated a list of the best interior design courses currently available in London. 1. The Inchbald School of Design

With an alumni that reads like a rap sheet of the world’s top 100, this intimate university has been providing the some of the best courses in design for over half a century.

Founded by Jacqueline Duncan OBE in 1960, this Belgravia based design school was the first professional body of its kind in Europe. Today their internationally renowned courses are BIID recommended and have the added bonus of being accredited by Glyndŵr University.

2. Chelsea College of Arts

University of the Arts London offers an extensive range of courses in art, design, fashion, communication and performing art, with many of their graduates going on to work in and shape creative industries worldwide.

The University draws together six renowned colleges, each with its own world-class reputation. Offering an excellent selection of facilities available to students, these include everything from letterpress machinery to studio theatres alongside their expansive college archive.

KLC School of Design was established over 30 years ago by interior designer and former President of the British Institute of Interior Design, Jenny Gibbs. Over the years it has built up an outstanding national and international reputation for providing practical, accessible and professional career training for the interior and garden design industries.

4. RCA

Led by Head of Programme Ab Rogers, the RCA offers one of the most highly regarded MA courses in interior design around. The two-year interior design programme runs in parallel with the architecture programme, with separate and related areas of production to include lectures, seminars, group work and individual thesis work. These are offered in the unique RCA studio context of interdisciplinary, workshop-oriented, speculative study.

The programme is delivered by practising designers, architects and theorists, all of whom are international leaders in their fields. There are plentiful opportunities for industry-connected live projects and research. A dynamic lecture series offers talks by practitioners as well as communicators, commentators and artists from related disciplines – set design, architecture, branding, digital design, engineering, science, psychology, literature and fine art. 

The MA programme culminates in the Summer Show, where graduating students exhibit their work to the art and design world.
