Threading its way between the mediums of art and design the bespoke finishes industry is more influential than ever before. Progressions in technology have led to new techniques allowing companies to offer an almost unlimited variety of materials, finishes and applications.
The multi industry appeal of this skill and resulting variety of commissions continues to push the boundaries of what is considered possible. Through the mediums of polished plaster, metal resin and lacquers, we are seeing an explosion of original artistic creations. For designers, having the option to substitute expensive materials such as brass or bronze without the loss of aesthetic quality has opened up a world of infinite possibilities.

1. BASED UPON
Based Upon is a family company established in 2004 by brothers Ian and Richard Abell. Working at the forefront of Britain’s creative industry, their company produces commissioned art work as well as unique pieces and bespoke interior finishes. The studios skills extend to
Founded on the philosophy of continuous innovation, their inaugural collection of design pieces was debuted in 2005 in Comme Des Garcons, Dover Street Market, London. Bolstered by the success of this exhibition, the studio hosted their first art, design and sound based exhibition on Brick Lane; ‘Based Upon Desire’.
Revered for the strong sense of narrative imbued in their creations, their in house collection explores the relationship between man and nature via sculptural furniture pieces and fine artworks. Often travelling globally to gather inspiration and research for projects, the team recently flew to India for a one-off private client commission.
Today Based Upon’s studio is comprised of 45 artists, craftsmen and designers who work with an intimate network of international specialists on a plethora of projects. Whether it is bespoke bronze panelling (right), one off furniture (above) and joinery pieces or artworks, Based Upon have proven that they are able to turn their hand to the most demanding or unique commission.
Based Upon have exhibited at many international fairs and auction houses including Christies and most recently at this years Masterpiece. Their exhibition of past and future commissioned works included ‘The Birth of Tramazite’. Ian Able (Creative Director) explains “with this series, we are exploring the surge from primordial unity, through the fissions of creation, with its inherent loss – back to a restored wholeness, free from the fractures of perception, where the sublime is touched and the spiritual realised.”

2. HUTSON BESPOKE
Hutson Bespoke is a London based luxury interiors and finishes company. Created by Amanda Hutson, who has worked with designers both in the UK and Europe for over 20 years, her studio provides a complete hands-on approach to their commissions.
Known primarily for their exclusive and exotic finishes, Huston Bespoke’s service also include bespoke furniture, original artwork, interior consultations and bespoke lighting schemes. The selection of diverse and specialist treatments includes metal resins, shagreen, leather, lacquers, coconut, and gold leaf, which can also be applied to walls to add wonderful colour and texture to any room.
Amanda Hutson has designed furniture for a number of high profile hotels such as The Ritz, and the Grand in Amsterdam as well as prestigious residential projects including numerous luxury London apartments and Winfield House, Regents Park (official residence of the Ambassador of the Unites States of America).

3. SURFACE FORM
Surfaceform is a bespoke finishes company specialising in concrete, polished plaster, impasto and relief. Their in-house team of designers and experienced craftsmen collaborate with leading architects and interior designers on a range of projects in the commercial and high-end residential sectors as well as private commissions.
Today the team continues to push boundaries with original concepts and designs, bringing a wealth of experience to the world of architectural interiors. Notable projects include Balenciaga and Peter Mark’s flagship stores. Their recently completed Grillagh Water House by Patrick Bradley Architects was awarded the RIBA regional special Small Project Award in 2015.
