Minimalism: A New World Ordered Part II

Part II of our Minimalism series presents a shortlist of today's top studios driving this style.

Having started Studio KO in 1999, Olivier Marty and Karl Fournier have experienced a meteoric rise to the top of the industry. Having met whilst studying at the Paris Ecole des Beaux Arts, the ambitious duo established their studio a few months prior to graduating. They are primarily known for their series of strict minimalist villas, seamlessly integrated into the spectacular landscapes of France and Morocco.

Studio KO’s success was kickstarted from a holiday in Morocco, where a mutual friend introduced them to Patrick Guerrand-Hermes (of the Hermés fashion dynasty) who was looking for architects to work on his projects in the north. In a country which at the time had a close knit design community, news of their celebrated designs quickly spread. Subsequent commissions arrived via the Agnelli dynasty and Pierre Berge.

Today the couple boast studios in London, Paris and Morocco and a portfolio of projects ranging from the private residence of Sheik Al Thani of Qatar to a continuing collaboration with esteemed restauranteur Andres Balzaar. Their ability to produce both elegantly minimalist interiors as well as turning their hand to more elaborate commissions (such as The Chiltern Firehouse) has no doubt increased their now global appeal.

Since their inaugural commission designing Jil Sander’s flagship store in Paris, Gabellini Shepherd have become one of the most in demand studios around. Using space and light as sculptural materials, their signature minimalist aesthetic has garnered the attention of today’s cultural elite. Their portfolio boasts a selection of projects ranging from urban and commercial master plans to private residences, fashion boutiques and contemporary art galleries.

Based in New York, the studio is headed up by Michael Gabellini. A student of visionary architects, Rem Koolhas and Zaha Hadid. His early exposure to minimalism is evident in his work. Adopting a similarly reductionist approach, his work has been described as “designing minimalist spaces enriched by sumptuous materials”.

Gabellini’s talent for producing conceptualised designs and an adept eye for spacial planning has earned him clients from fashion behemoth Giorgio Armani to hotel magnate Ian Schrager. Residential projects also make up a large part of his practice. Bolstered by their internationally acclaimed projects, the firm has completed commissions across the globe, including Italy, South Korea, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the Cayman Islands.
