The New Generation: Daniel Welham

From exploring the far reaches of Borneo to the necessity of 'Friday Doughnuts' - Daniel gives us an insight into his world.

My ideal evening in London is spent…. outside enjoying the warmer summer months. The Grapes in Limehouse is a charming old fashioned English pub with fantastic south facing river views. Well worth a visit in the summer.  76 Narrow St. Limehouse, London E14 8BP

The three pieces of clothing, accessories or items that I never go without when travelling are… My Macbook Air, Jawbone speaker and Persol sunglasses.

My favourite room in my house is… I live in the Barbican and the apartment has an open-plan double-height living area which I love to spend time in.

London‘s best-kept secret is… Paramount at the top of Centre Point. Not entirely a “secret” but it’s a space many people seem to not have been to, and I highly recommend it for amazing views of the city.

If I weren’t based in London, the city I would live in would be… Tokyo. We worked on a project in Niseko, northern Japan, a few years ago and I fell in love with Tokyo’s energy and creativity whilst over there.

My favourite place I’ve travelled to in the last year was… Borneo. I travelled there on a work trip last year, and discovered so much untouched natural beauty. I’m looking forward to go back and exploring it further.

If I weren’t an architect, I would be… I was torn between psychology and architecture before going to university, but am happy with my decision.

The last item I bought and loved… My Macbook Air. I travel quite regularly and love how portable it is.

The last place that really inspired me… Copenhagen. The city’s urban planning and innovative approach to modern residential architecture was really inspiring.

My most recent discovery… As a sushi lover, Kurobuta on the Kings Road has become a new favourite of mine. 312 Kings Road, SW3 5UH

My style icon is…Nick Wooster. As a style icon with silver hair, he provides me something to aspire towards!

My drink of choice is…. A rich, peaty single malt whisky on a cold day.

The book that most inspired me was… “Quarries” by Edward Burtynsky. I find his books fascinating.

My preferred way to relax would be…. I play football twice a week and find it to be the best way to relax and keep energised.

The indulgence I could not forgo… Friday doughnuts from St John Bakery, Clerkenwell. Our office relies on them!  26 Saint John Street, London EC1M 4AY
